# Add a Speed Dial Number

Speed dial lets you assign a short code to a full phone number so that a frequently called external contact can be reached without dialing the entire number each time. This page walks through creating one speed dial entry.

## Before you start

The example below assumes the following:

- You already have an outbound route that permits dialing the external number `15990234988`, and you want the code `111` to place that call.
- A [speed dial prefix](/pbx/administrator-guide/set-up-speed-dial-prefix/) is enabled and set to `*89`.

The prefix is what tells the system a dialed number is a speed dial code rather than an internal extension, so it must be configured before speed dial codes will work.

:::caution
A speed dial code only completes the call if an outbound route already permits the destination number. If no route allows that external number, dialing the code fails even though the entry is saved. Confirm the outbound route before you rely on the speed dial.
:::

## Add the speed dial entry

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal and go to **Call Features > Speed Dial**, then click **Add**.
2. In the **Speed Dial Number** field, enter the code you want users to dial. For this example, enter `111`.
3. In the **Phone Number** field, enter the full external number the code should reach: `15990234988`.
4. (Optional) In the **Remark** field, add a label that identifies the entry.

   :::note
   The remark accepts up to 60 characters.
   :::

   When a user places a call with this speed dial code, the remark appears beneath the phone number on the call screen, making the destination easy to recognize.
5. Click **Save**, then **Apply**.

## Result

- The new entry is now listed on the Speed Dial page.
- Extension users can dial `*89111` to call the external number `15990234988`, the `*89` prefix followed by the `111` code.
