# Apply a New Template to a Provisioned IP Phone/Gateway

An auto-provisioning template is a saved set of configuration settings that Cloud Voice pushes to a device for you. When an IP (Internet Protocol) phone or gateway is already provisioned, you can change how it behaves by building a custom template and reassigning the device to it. Cloud Voice sends the new settings out automatically once you save the change, so you do not have to sign in to the device itself.

:::note
Before you start, the template you want to use must already exist. If you have not built one yet, see [Create a Custom Auto Provisioning Template](/pbx/administrator-guide/create-a-custom-auto-provisioning-template/).
:::

## Change the template on a provisioned IP phone

1. In the PBX web portal, go to **Auto Provisioning > Phones** and edit the phone you want to update.
2. Under **Options**, open the **Template** drop-down and choose the template you want to apply.
3. Click **Save**.

Cloud Voice applies the settings from the new template to the phone automatically.

:::note
A phone picks up the new template on its own, and the portal does not prompt you to reboot it. This is different from a gateway (see below), which has to restart before its new settings take effect.
:::

## Change the template on a provisioned gateway

1. In the PBX web portal, go to **Auto Provisioning > Gateways** and edit the gateway you want to update.
2. Under **Options**, open the **Template** drop-down and choose the template you want to apply.
3. Click **Save**. Cloud Voice asks whether you want to reboot the gateway.
4. Click **OK** to reboot the gateway so the new configuration takes effect.

:::caution
A gateway carries live calls, and rebooting it takes the gateway offline for a short time. Any calls running through it will drop when it restarts. Apply the template during a maintenance window or when the gateway is idle.
:::

Once the gateway restarts, the settings from the new template are applied automatically.
