# Auto Cleanup Voicemail Messages

Mailboxes fill up over time, and once they do, callers can no longer leave new messages. To keep space available, Cloud Voice can prune older voicemail automatically. You set two limits per mailbox, a maximum message count and a maximum age in days, and the system discards the oldest messages whenever either limit is exceeded. Follow the steps below to configure automatic cleanup.

## Configure voicemail cleanup

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal and open **System > Storage > Auto Cleanup > Voicemail Auto Cleanup**.

   :::note
   This is a single system-wide policy: the limits you set here apply to every extension's mailbox, not to one extension at a time.
   :::
2. In **Max Number of Voicemail**, set the largest number of messages a single mailbox should hold.
3. In **Voicemail Preservation Days**, set how long a message may stay in the mailbox before it is eligible for removal.

   :::note
   Entering `0` removes the limit, so messages are never aged out by day count.
   :::
4. Select **Save**.

## What happens next

Once the limits are in effect, Cloud Voice deletes the oldest voicemail as new messages push a mailbox past either threshold.

:::caution
Cleanup runs automatically and the deleted messages cannot be recovered. Set limits with enough headroom that users are not surprised by lost voicemail, and turn on the reminder below so you get a warning before anything is removed.
:::

If you have turned on the [auto cleanup reminder](/pbx/administrator-guide/event-notification-overview/#event-notification-overview__auto-cleanup-reminder), you also receive an email alert as soon as a mailbox reaches 90% of its configured limit, giving you a chance to review messages before they are removed.
