# Leave a Voicemail Without Ringing the Recipient

Sometimes a written message loses the tone you want to convey, but a live call would interrupt someone who is busy or off the clock. Cloud Voice lets you record a voicemail and deliver it directly to a recipient's mailbox without their phone ringing. The message waits for them to review it whenever they are ready, which is handy when you need to pass along information to a colleague who is in a meeting or has stepped away. It also gives them time to think things over before they respond.

:::note
This feature is available only to internal extension users.

## Leave the voicemail

1. To reach one person, dial the feature code `*12` (a feature code is a short star-prefixed dialing code that triggers a PBX function) followed by their extension number. For example, dial `*121001` to leave a message for extension 1001.
2. To reach a queue, a ring group, or a custom group, dial `*12` followed by that group's voicemail number. For example, dial `*126100`.
3. Listen to the voice prompt, then record your message.
4. Hang up when you finish, or press `#` to end the recording.

:::caution
There is no ringing and no live answer to confirm you reached the right person, so double-check the extension or group voicemail number before you start recording. If the number is wrong, the message lands in the wrong mailbox.

:::tip
`*12` is the default feature code for leaving a voicemail. To change the code or turn it on or off, go to **Call Features > Feature Code > Voicemail > Leave a Voicemail for Extension/Group Voicemail** in the PBX web portal.
