# Log out of a Hot Desking Phone

When a user finishes a shift at a shared hot desking phone, they should log out so the extension is released and the device is ready for the next person. There are two ways to do this from the phone itself.

## Log out from the phone

Use either method below.

### Dial the Guest Out feature code

Pick up the hot desking phone and dial the **Guest Out** feature code.

The default code is `*084`. To change it, go to **Call Features > Feature Code > Hot Desking > Guest Out** and set a code of your own.

### Press the Guest Out key

When a user logs in, Cloud Voice automatically assigns a **Guest Out** key to the phone. This is a BLF (Busy Lamp Field) key, one of the phone's programmable buttons. Pressing it logs the user out immediately.

:::note[Troubleshooting]
If pressing the **Guest Out** key does not log the user out, confirm that the **Guest Out** feature code has not been reassigned. Check it under **Call Features > Feature Code > Hot Desking > Guest Out**.
:::

## What happens after logout

The extension is signed out of the phone, and the device returns to its default state. Until another user logs in, the phone can place emergency calls only.

:::caution
Call history stays on the hot desking phone after logout. If the records are sensitive, clear them from the phone manually.
:::

:::note
- If you have configured the system to [retain configurations for hot desking phones](/pbx/administrator-guide/retain-configurations-for-hot-desking-phones/), general device settings such as language, signal tones, distinctive ringtone, and codecs are kept. These come from the phone's template under **Auto Provisioning > Phones >** ![edit phone](/images/pbx/wizard-previous.png) **> Phone**. Extension registration details, LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) directory settings, and function key assignments are always cleared.
- If a user forgets to log out, the next user to log in on that phone signs the previous user out automatically. You can also [force a logout from the web portal](/pbx/administrator-guide/manage-hot-desking-feature/#manage-hot-desking-feature__section_pxh_j3s_cxb).
