# Manage Emergency Numbers

An emergency number is the short code a caller dials to reach emergency services (for example 911 for police, fire, or ambulance in North America). Once emergency numbers exist on your system, you can update the details of an entry or remove one that is no longer needed. Both tasks start from **Call Control > Emergency Number** in the management portal.

:::note
Emergency numbers are part of your emergency calling setup, often referred to as E911 (Enhanced 911, which passes the caller's location to the dispatch center). Because these entries decide how life-safety calls are routed, treat every change here as high impact and double-check your work before you leave the page.

## Edit an emergency number

Edit an entry when you need to correct the dialed digits or update how the call is handled, so the number keeps reaching emergency services.

1. Sign in to the management portal and open **Call Control > Emergency Number**.
2. Locate the number you want to change and click the edit icon ![Edit](/images/pbx/edit.png) next to it.
3. Adjust the details as needed.
4. Click **Save**, then **Apply** to put the change into effect.

:::caution
An edit is not live until you click **Apply**. If you click **Save** and leave the page without applying, the old settings stay active and your change is lost. After applying, confirm the entry is still correct so callers can continue to reach emergency services.
:::

## Delete an emergency number

Delete an entry only when that emergency number is no longer in use on your system.

1. Sign in to the management portal and open **Call Control > Emergency Number**.
2. Find the entry you want to remove and click the delete icon ![Delete](/images/pbx/delete.png) next to it.
3. When the confirmation dialog appears, click **OK**.
4. Click **Apply** to finish removing the number.

:::danger
Deleting an emergency number removes the ability to reach emergency services by dialing that code. Anyone who dials the deleted number will no longer be connected. Confirm the entry is truly unused before you delete it, and never place a live test call to a real emergency number (such as 911) without first coordinating with the dispatch center.
