# Modify Provisioned Phone Settings

Centralized provisioning applies one common configuration across many phones at once. Sometimes a single device needs something different (a particular preference or codec) without changing everyone else. This page shows how to change the general settings for one already-provisioned phone and push the update to it.

It covers two phone types managed by the PBX (Private Branch Exchange, the phone system that routes your calls): standard IP phones (desk phones that connect over the network) and DECT phones (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications, the cordless handsets that pair with a base station). The path differs by type: you edit an IP phone through its extension, and you edit a DECT phone directly in the Auto Provisioning list.

## Adjust a provisioned IP phone

1. Sign in to the PBX web portal and open **Extension and Trunk > Extension**, then edit the extension whose phone you want to change.
2. Update the device linked to that extension:
   1. Select the **Phone** tab.
   2. Change the values you need under the **Preference** section (general device options) and the **Codecs** section (the audio formats the phone is allowed to use; a codec, short for coder-decoder, converts voice to and from network data).
   3. Click **Save**.

   :::caution
   A phone and the far end of a call must share at least one codec. If you remove a codec that the rest of the system relies on, calls to or from this phone can fail or connect with no audio. Change codec settings only when you know which formats your trunks and other devices support.

   :::note
   To reach settings that are not exposed here, click the phone's IP address in the provisioning list to open the device's own web interface, then edit the configuration directly on the phone.
   :::
3. Reprovision the phone so the changes take effect:
   1. Open **Auto Provisioning > Phones**.
   2. Click the reprovision icon ![Reprovision](/images/pbx/refresh.png) next to the phone assigned to that extension.

   The phone applies the new settings on its own.

   :::caution
   Reprovisioning pushes the new configuration to the phone and can restart it, which briefly interrupts service. If the phone might be on an active call, reprovision during a quiet period or a scheduled maintenance window.

## Adjust a provisioned DECT phone

A DECT phone is reached straight from the provisioning list rather than through **Extension and Trunk**, so the first step differs from the IP phone flow above.

1. Sign in to the PBX web portal and open **Auto Provisioning > Phones**, then edit the DECT phone you want to change.
2. Update the values under the **Preference** and **Codecs** sections, then click **Save**.
3. In the phone provisioning list, click the reprovision icon ![Reprovision](/images/pbx/refresh.png) beside that DECT phone.

   The phone applies the new settings on its own.
