# Perform an Attended Transfer

An attended transfer lets you talk to the destination party before handing the call over. Use it when you want to confirm the recipient is available or give them context about the caller before connecting the two.

An attended transfer differs from a blind transfer: a blind transfer sends the call to the destination immediately, without you speaking to that person first. Choose an attended transfer whenever a short heads-up to the recipient is worth the extra step.

:::note
A feature code (sometimes called a star code) is a short sequence you dial on your phone's keypad to trigger a PBX (Private Branch Exchange, your phone system) function. The keypad tones that carry it are DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) signals. The attended-transfer code ships as `*3` by default, but an administrator can change it. If `*3` does nothing, check the feature code configured on your system.
:::

## Procedure

1. While on the call, enter the attended-transfer feature code (the default is `*3`).

   The active call is put on hold, and you hear the system announce "transfer" followed by a dial tone.

   :::caution
   The original caller is now on hold and hears hold music or silence until you finish. They cannot hear your conversation with the recipient, so keep them in mind and do not leave them waiting longer than necessary.
   :::

2. Dial the number of the person you want to transfer the call to.

3. Wait for that person to pick up, then speak with them to introduce the caller or confirm they can take the call.

   :::tip
   This is the whole point of an attended transfer: use the private moment while the caller is on hold to announce who is calling and why, so the recipient is ready before you connect them.
   :::

4. Hang up to finish the transfer.

   The original caller and the recipient are now connected to each other.

   :::caution
   Hanging up is the action that commits the transfer. Do not hang up until the recipient has answered and you have finished speaking, otherwise the caller may be sent to an extension that no one has picked up.
