# Reassign an Extension to a Provisioned IP Phone/Gateway

When a device has already been provisioned but its owner changes, or a gateway port needs to serve a different line, you can swap the extension bound to that phone or port without provisioning it from scratch. The following procedures cover both IP phones and gateways.

## Reassign an extension to a provisioned IP phone

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal and go to **Auto Provisioning > Phones**, then open the phone you want to change for editing.
2. Under **Assign Extension**, choose the extension you want the phone to use.

   :::tip
   If the extension you're after doesn't appear in the drop-down, it may already be tied to another phone or gateway. You can either [release it from the device it's currently bound to](/pbx/administrator-guide/release-an-extension-from-a-provisioned-ip-phone-or-gateway/), or, if you want the extension to ring on several endpoints at once, [allow multiple registrations for the extension number](/pbx/administrator-guide/allow-multiple-registrations-for-one-extension-number/).
   :::
3. Click **Save**.

The extension registers on the phone automatically, and the settings from the assigned template are pushed to the device.

## Reassign an extension to a provisioned gateway

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal and go to **Auto Provisioning > Gateways**, then open the gateway you want to change for editing.
2. Under **Assign Extension**, pick the extension for the port you want to reassign.

   :::tip
   :::
3. Click **Save**. Cloud Voice builds a new configuration file for the gateway and asks whether you want to reboot it.
4. Click **OK** to reboot the gateway and apply the changes.

   :::caution
   Rebooting takes the gateway offline for a short time, which drops any calls in progress on its ports. When you can, reassign and reboot during a maintenance window or a quiet period.
   :::

Once the gateway comes back up, the extension is registered on the selected port.
