# Reset an Extension

Each extension has a user password that lets its owner sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal and the Cloud Voice App. If someone forgets this password and cannot recover it, an administrator can assign a replacement directly from the extension's settings. There is no "email me a reset link" step here: you set the new password yourself and then pass it to the user.

## Procedure

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal and open **Extension and Trunk > Extension**.
2. Locate the extension you want to update, then click the edit icon ![Edit an extension](/images/pbx/edit.png) on its row.
3. Under **User Information**, clear the **User Password** field and type the new password.
4. Click **Save**.

:::note
The extension list can be long. Use the search box at the top of the **Extension** page to find the right one by name, number, or email before you open it, so you do not edit the wrong account.
:::

:::tip
Set a strong password (a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols). Because you are choosing it on the user's behalf, treat it as temporary: ask the user to sign in and change it to something only they know.
:::

## Result

The user password is updated as soon as you click **Save**.

:::caution
The old password stops working the moment you save. The user will not be able to sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal or the Cloud Voice App until you give them the new password, so share it with them right away through a secure channel.
:::

:::note
The user password is separate from the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) registration credentials that connect a desk phone or softphone to the network. Changing the user password affects portal and Cloud Voice App sign-in only; it does not re-register or drop any device.
