# Set Up a Speed Dial Prefix

Speed dial lets people reach a saved number by dialing a short code. Because those codes could otherwise clash with extension numbers, users dial them behind a prefix. The prefix tells Cloud Voice to treat what follows as a speed dial code rather than an extension. Follow the steps below to set the prefix for your system.

## Set the prefix

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal and open **Call Features > Speed Dial**.
2. Select **Prefix**.
3. In the **Speed Dial Prefix** field, type the prefix you want to use.

   :::note
   - Use only digits and the special characters `*` and `#`.
   - The prefix can be no longer than 7 characters.
   :::

   The prefix defaults to `*89`.
4. Click **Save**, then **Apply** to activate the change.

   :::caution
   The prefix applies to everyone on the system. If you change a prefix that people are already using, their old speed dial habit stops working the moment you click **Apply**, and they must dial the new prefix instead. Let users know before you change it.
   :::

:::tip
To turn the speed dial prefix off, go to **Call Features > Feature Code > Speed Dial > Speed Dial Prefix**.
