# Manually Perform a Directory Synchronization

Directory synchronization keeps the users and groups in your PBX (Private Branch Exchange, the phone system) aligned with the accounts in Microsoft Entra ID. It normally runs on its own schedule, but you do not have to wait for the next cycle. Run a sync by hand when you want changes reflected right away, for example:

- You have just defined a synchronization rule and want it to take effect immediately.
- People or groups have changed in Microsoft Entra ID and you need those updates in the phone system now.

Microsoft Entra ID (formerly known as Azure AD) is Microsoft's cloud identity and directory service. A manual sync only pulls the current state from Entra ID into Cloud Voice, so any user or group edits should be made in Entra ID first, then synced here.

## Run a sync on demand

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice management portal.
2. Open **Integrations > Collaboration**.
3. In the **Basic** section, click **Update Now**.

You only need this for immediate results. The scheduled synchronization continues to run on its own, so routine directory changes are picked up automatically without any action from you.

Clicking **Update Now** applies your current synchronization rules right away. If you just created or edited a rule, confirm it is correct before syncing, because it takes effect immediately and applies to every matching user and group.

## Result

Cloud Voice performs a single directory synchronization, pulling the current user and group details from Microsoft Entra ID into the phone system.
