# Pause Google Workspace Synchronization

When the Google Workspace integration is active, changes made to users in Google Workspace flow into your phone system and overwrite the matching extension data. If you want to freeze that data for a while (for example, during a directory cleanup or a staged rollout), you can put synchronization on hold instead of removing the integration. Pausing keeps the connection and its settings in place, so you only stop the flow of updates.

:::note
An extension is the internal phone identity assigned to a user (the short number they dial and answer calls on). "Synchronization" is the automatic copying of user details (name, email, and so on) from Google Workspace into those extensions on your PBX (Private Branch Exchange, the phone system that routes your calls).
:::

## Pause the synchronization

1. Sign in to the PBX web portal and open **Integrations > Collaboration**. The Google Workspace connection is managed from this Collaboration page.
2. Under **User Synchronization**, toggle the switch off.

3. Click **Save**.
4. In the confirmation dialog, choose how to handle the linked extensions, then complete the action:

   ![Confirmation dialog with an option to remove synced extensions](/images/pbx/confirm-to-disable-user-sync.png)

   a. To remove the PBX extensions tied to the synced users, tick **Delete the PBX extensions in sync with the Users**. Leave this box unticked if you only want to pause: the extensions then stay in place and continue working.

   b. Click **Confirm**.

:::tip
For a temporary hold, leave **Delete the PBX extensions in sync with the Users** unchecked. This keeps every extension live so users can still make and receive calls while sync is paused.
:::

:::danger
Ticking **Delete the PBX extensions in sync with the Users** permanently removes those extensions. The affected users lose their phone service, including the ability to place emergency (E911) calls, and the extensions cannot be recovered from this dialog. Only select it if you intend to decommission those extensions.
:::

## What happens next

- User synchronization stops.
- Your existing **User Synchronization** configuration is preserved but becomes read-only while sync is paused.
- If you kept the linked extensions, they are locked for the duration of the pause: you cannot edit their user details and you cannot delete them.

:::caution
While sync is paused you cannot change the **User Synchronization** settings, and any extensions you chose to keep are locked. To edit or delete those extensions, or to change the sync configuration, you must resume synchronization or remove the integration first.
