# Provision Mitel IP Phones with Cloud Voice

Provisioning lets Cloud Voice hand a phone its configuration from the server instead of you keying settings in by hand. This page walks through provisioning a Mitel IP phone, using a Mitel 6867i (firmware 5.0.0.1018) as the working example. The same approach applies to the other supported Mitel models.

## Supported models and firmware

Before you begin, confirm that both the phone and Cloud Voice meet the minimum firmware requirements.

## Choose your approach

How you provision depends on how many phones you are bringing online.

| Scenario | What you do |
|----------|-------------|
| Provision a single Mitel phone | Add the provisioning link that Cloud Voice generates to the phone by hand, so the phone pulls its configuration from that link. See [Provision a single phone](#provision-a-single-phone). |
| Provision multiple Mitel phones | Use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) option 66 to deliver the Cloud Voice provisioning link to the phones automatically, so each phone pulls its configuration from that link. See [Provision multiple phones with DHCP option 66](#provision-multiple-phones-with-dhcp-option-66). |

## Provision a single phone

### Before you start

- Make sure the default auto provisioning template for your phone model has been downloaded. You'll find the templates under **Auto Provisioning > Resource Repository > Default Templates**.
- If the phone was used previously, factory-reset it first.
- Have the phone's details on hand: vendor, model, and MAC address (Media Access Control address, the unique hardware address printed on a label on the phone).

### Step 1. Add the phone in Cloud Voice

Adding the phone tells Cloud Voice to build a configuration file keyed to the phone's MAC address.

1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice web portal and go to **Auto Provisioning > Phones**.
2. Click **Add > Add**.
3. In the **IP Phone** section, fill in the phone's details.

   ![Adding a Mitel phone by vendor, model, and MAC address](/images/pbx/add-a-mitel-phone.png)

   - **Vendor**: Choose **Mitel**.
   - **Model**: Pick your phone model. This example uses **6867i**.
   - **MAC Address**: Type the phone's MAC address.

4. In the **Options** section, set the auto provisioning options.

   ![Cloud Voice, template and provisioning link options for a Mitel phone](/images/pbx/mitel-autop-option-cloud.png)

   - **Template**: Select a template from the drop-down list.

     :::note
     You can use the default template that matches your phone model, or build your own custom auto provisioning template.
     :::

   - **Provisioning Link**: This link is created for you automatically and points to where the phone's configuration file lives on the server.

     :::note
     Make a note of the provisioning link. You'll need it in Step 2.
     :::

5. In the **Assign Extension** section, assign an extension to the phone.

   ![Assigning an extension to the phone during provisioning](/images/pbx/assign-an-extension-pnp.png)

   :::tip
   If the extension you want isn't in the drop-down list, it's already tied to another IP phone. You have two ways to free it up:

   - Release the extension from the phone it's currently associated with.
   - Enable concurrent registration for that extension, which lets it register on more than one device. By default, Cloud Voice permits an extension to register with only one SIP (Session Initiation Protocol, the standard that sets up voice calls) endpoint.
   :::

6. Click **Save**.

### Step 2. Point the phone at the provisioning server

Enter the provisioning link from Cloud Voice into the Mitel phone's own web interface.

1. Log in to the phone's web interface.

   ![Signing in to the Mitel phone's web interface](/images/pbx/mitel-phone-login.png)

   a. In your browser's address bar, enter the phone's IP address.

   b. Enter the username `admin` and its password. In this example, the default password is `22222`.

   c. Click **Sign in**.

   :::caution
   `22222` is the factory default admin password on Mitel phones. Change it to a strong, unique password once you are signed in. A phone left on its default password can be reconfigured by anyone who can reach it on the network.
   :::

2. In the left navigation bar, go to **Advanced Settings > Configuration Server**, then set the following.

   a. In the **Download Protocol** drop-down list, select **HTTPS**.

      ![Selecting HTTPS as the download protocol](/images/pbx/mitel-download-protocol.png)

   b. Break the provisioning link into its parts and enter each one.

      ![Cloud Voice, HTTPS server, path, and port fields on the Mitel phone](/images/pbx/mitel-https-settings.png)

      - **HTTPS Server**: Enter your Cloud Voice system's domain name, for example `pbx.example.com`.
      - **HTTPS Path**: Enter the path from the provisioning link, for example `api/autoprovision/gVvUsLADybIdHwPX`.
      - **HTTPS Port**: Enter the HTTPS port, `443`.

   c. Click **Save Settings**.

### Step 3. Turn off certificate validation

Some older Mitel phones lack the certificates they need to trust the server, which stops them from downloading configuration files. Disabling certificate validation on the phone bypasses that check.

:::caution
For security, use a trusted certificate whenever possible. Turning off server validation can expose the network to risk.
:::

1. On the phone's web interface, go to **Advanced Settings > Network > HTTPS Settings**, and disable **Validate Certificates**.

   ![Disabling certificate validation on the Mitel phone](/images/pbx/disable-cert-validation.png)

2. Click **Save Settings**.
3. Reboot the phone manually.

### Result

- After it reboots, the phone downloads its configuration from Cloud Voice and applies the settings on its own.
- The extension registers successfully on the phone. To confirm, check the registration status under **Auto Provisioning > Phones** in the web portal.

## Provision multiple phones with DHCP option 66

### Before you start

- Only one DHCP server may be active on the subnet where the phones are deployed. If more than one is present, the phones may fail to obtain an IP address.
- Make sure the default auto provisioning template for your phone model has been downloaded. You'll find the templates under **Auto Provisioning > Resource Repository > Default Templates**.
- If a phone was used previously, factory-reset it first.
- Have each phone's details on hand: vendor, model, and MAC address.

   - **Template**: Select a template from the drop-down list.

     :::note
     You can use the default template that matches your phone model, or build your own custom auto provisioning template.
     :::

   - **Provisioning Link**: This link is created for you automatically and points to where the phone's configuration file lives on the server.

     :::note
     Make a note of the provisioning link. You'll need it in Step 2.
     :::

5. In the **Assign Extension** section, assign an extension to the phone.

   :::tip

   :::

6. Click **Save**.

### Step 2. Set DHCP option 66 on the DHCP server

On the subnet where the phones are deployed, use the generated provisioning link to configure option 66 on your DHCP server.

:::note
Option 66 is the DHCP field that tells a phone where to fetch its configuration. When a phone boots and requests an IP address, the DHCP server hands back this link, so the phone knows to pull its settings from Cloud Voice without any manual entry.
:::

1. In the Cloud Voice web portal, copy the provisioning link from the phone's detail page.

   ![Cloud Voice, copying a phone's provisioning link from its detail page](/images/pbx/mitel-prov-link-cloud.png)

2. On the DHCP server, set option 66 to the provisioning link. The example below shows a typical configuration.

   ![Cloud Voice, DHCP option 66 set to the provisioning link on a router](/images/pbx/dhcp-option-66-on-router-pce.png)

### Step 3. Turn off certificate validation

Some older Mitel phones lack the certificates they need to trust the server, which stops them from downloading configuration files. Disabling certificate validation on the phone bypasses that check.

:::caution
For security, use a trusted certificate whenever possible. Turning off server validation can expose the network to risk.
:::

1. Log in to the phone's web interface.

3. Click **Save Settings**.
4. Reboot the phone manually.

### Result

- After it reboots, the phone gets an IP address from the DHCP server, downloads its configuration from Cloud Voice through the provisioning link, and applies the settings on its own.
- The extension registers successfully on the phone. To confirm, check the registration status under **Auto Provisioning > Phones** in the web portal.
