# Configure Chat Notifications

The Cloud Voice App lets you tune how it alerts you to new chat messages. You can silence a single conversation without affecting the rest, and you can set the app-wide rules that govern push notifications and alert sounds.

A push notification is the banner, sound, or badge your phone shows for a new message even when the Cloud Voice App is closed or running in the background. The settings on this page decide when those alerts appear.

## Silence a single chat

Muting a conversation is a per-chat setting. Use it when one thread is noisy but you still want alerts everywhere else.

1. In the Cloud Voice App, open **Chat** and select **Internal Chat**.
2. Open the conversation, then tap the more options icon ![More options](/images/pbx/more-horiz.png) in the top-right corner.
3. On the **Chat Information** screen, toggle **Mute Notifications**:

   - Turn it **on** to mute the chat.

     Muted chats display a mute marker ![Muted](/images/pbx/mute.png). Messages still arrive, but the app no longer sends push notifications for them. New activity shows as a red dot next to the chat rather than an unread-message count.

     :::caution
     Muting stops the alerts, not the messages. You keep receiving everything in the chat, but you have to open it to see what is new. Do not mute a chat where you need to react to time-sensitive messages.

   - Turn it **off** to unmute the chat and resume push notifications for new messages.

## Set notification rules for all chats

These settings apply to every conversation and control what happens when the Cloud Voice App is running in the background.

1. On the **Calls** page, tap your account in the top-left corner.
2. Go to **Settings** > **New Message Alerts** and adjust the options below.

| Setting | What it controls |
| --- | --- |
| New Message Alerts | Whether the app sends a push notification when a new chat message arrives. |
| Sound | Whether a sound plays when a new chat message arrives. |
| When desktop or web is signed in | Whether your phone still receives push notifications while you are also signed in to the Cloud Voice App on a computer. |

:::caution
**New Message Alerts** is the master switch for every conversation. Turning it off silences push notifications for all chats at once, not just the one you were looking at.

:::tip
Leave **When desktop or web is signed in** on if you move between your desk and your phone and never want to miss a message. Turn it off if you would rather not get the same alert twice while you are already working at the computer.
