# Customize Extension List

The Extension panel shows the list of extensions you can monitor and act on. What appears there out of the box depends on how your system administrator has set things up: if an organizational structure is in place, you may see the default extension group, otherwise the panel may start empty. Either way, you can tailor the list yourself so it holds only the departments and groups you care about, then order them to match how you work. You can do this from either the Cloud Voice App web client or desktop client.

:::note
An extension is a single user or device on the phone system (for example, one person's softphone or desk phone). A department is a team pulled from the organizational structure your administrator defined, and an extension group is a set of extensions the administrator has grouped together. Customizing the list only changes your own view; it does not change what other users see or how the phone system is configured.
:::

## Before you begin

Make sure your environment meets these minimums:

- **PBX server** (Private Branch Exchange, the phone system server that routes your calls): version 84.18.0.59 or later
- **Cloud Voice App (Desktop)**: version 1.10.2 or later

:::caution
If your PBX server or desktop client is older than the versions listed above, the customize icon may not appear on the Extension panel. If you cannot find it, check your versions first and ask your administrator to update the server if needed.
:::

## Choose which groups to display

1. On the **Extension** panel, click the customize icon ![Customize the extension list](/images/pbx/custom-o.png).
2. In the window that opens, tick the departments or extension groups you want to see, then click **Confirm**.

   Your selections now appear on the Extension panel.

:::tip
You can select more than one department or group at a time. If your needs change later, reopen the customize window and adjust your selections, there is no limit to how often you can change them.
:::

## Reorder the list

To change the order in which departments and groups are listed, hover over the sort handle ![Drag to reorder](/images/pbx/Sort.png), then drag the item up or down and release it in the position you want.

:::note
Reordering is optional and is only for your convenience. The order you set applies to your own panel and is saved for the next time you sign in.
