# Exit or End a Meeting

When a meeting wraps up, you have two choices depending on your role: step out on your own, or close the meeting for everyone. Leaving is available to any participant, while shutting the meeting down for all attendees is reserved for the host (the person who runs the meeting).

## Leave a meeting

If something comes up and you need to step away before the meeting is over, you can drop out without ending the session for anyone else. The exact steps depend on whether you are the host.

### If you are the host

1. In the toolbar at the bottom of the meeting window, click **End**.
2. Select **Leave Meeting**, then confirm with **OK**.

You exit, and the meeting continues without you.

:::note
A meeting always needs a host, so when you leave, the next participant is automatically promoted to host. You do not have to hand off the role manually.
:::

### If you are a participant (not the host)

1. In the toolbar at the bottom of the meeting window, click **End**, then confirm with **OK**.

You exit and everyone else stays in the meeting. Because you are not the host, you are not asked to choose between leaving and ending: clicking **End** simply removes you.

## End a meeting

Ending a meeting closes it for all attendees at the same time. Only the host can do this.

1. In the toolbar at the bottom of the meeting window, click **End**.
2. Select **End Meeting**, then confirm with **OK**.

The meeting is closed immediately for every participant as well as for you.

:::caution
**End Meeting** disconnects everyone at once and cannot be undone; you would need to start a new meeting to continue. If you only need to step out and want the session to keep running, choose **Leave Meeting** instead.
