Provision Mitel IP Phones with Cloud Voice

Provisioning lets Cloud Voice hand a phone its configuration from the server instead of you keying settings in by hand. This page walks through provisioning a Mitel IP phone, using a Mitel 6867i (firmware 5.0.0.1018) as the working example. The same approach applies to the other supported Mitel models.

Before you begin, confirm that both the phone and Cloud Voice meet the minimum firmware requirements.

How you provision depends on how many phones you are bringing online.

ScenarioWhat you do
Provision a single Mitel phoneAdd the provisioning link that Cloud Voice generates to the phone by hand, so the phone pulls its configuration from that link. See Provision a single phone.
Provision multiple Mitel phonesUse DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) option 66 to deliver the Cloud Voice provisioning link to the phones automatically, so each phone pulls its configuration from that link. See Provision multiple phones with DHCP option 66.
  • Make sure the default auto provisioning template for your phone model has been downloaded. You’ll find the templates under Auto Provisioning > Resource Repository > Default Templates.
  • If the phone was used previously, factory-reset it first.
  • Have the phone’s details on hand: vendor, model, and MAC address (Media Access Control address, the unique hardware address printed on a label on the phone).

Adding the phone tells Cloud Voice to build a configuration file keyed to the phone’s MAC address.

  1. Sign in to the Cloud Voice web portal and go to Auto Provisioning > Phones.

  2. Click Add > Add.

  3. In the IP Phone section, fill in the phone’s details.

Adding a Mitel phone by vendor, model, and MAC address

    • Vendor: Choose Mitel.
    • Model: Pick your phone model. This example uses 6867i.
    • MAC Address: Type the phone’s MAC address.
  4. In the Options section, set the auto provisioning options.

    • Template: Select a template from the drop-down list.

    • Provisioning Link: This link is created for you automatically and points to where the phone’s configuration file lives on the server.

  5. In the Assign Extension section, assign an extension to the phone.

  6. Click Save.

Step 2. Point the phone at the provisioning server

Section titled “Step 2. Point the phone at the provisioning server”

Enter the provisioning link from Cloud Voice into the Mitel phone’s own web interface.

  1. Log in to the phone’s web interface.

Signing in to the Mitel phone's web interface

    a. In your browser’s address bar, enter the phone’s IP address.

    b. Enter the username admin and its password. In this example, the default password is 22222.

    c. Click Sign in.

  2. In the left navigation bar, go to Advanced Settings > Configuration Server, then set the following.

    a. In the Download Protocol drop-down list, select HTTPS.

Selecting HTTPS as the download protocol

    b. Break the provisioning link into its parts and enter each one.

Cloud Voice, HTTPS server, path, and port fields on the Mitel phone

    • HTTPS Server: Enter your Cloud Voice system’s domain name, for example pbx.example.com.
    • HTTPS Path: Enter the path from the provisioning link, for example api/autoprovision/gVvUsLADybIdHwPX.
    • HTTPS Port: Enter the HTTPS port, 443.

    c. Click Save Settings.

Some older Mitel phones lack the certificates they need to trust the server, which stops them from downloading configuration files. Disabling certificate validation on the phone bypasses that check.

  1. On the phone’s web interface, go to Advanced Settings > Network > HTTPS Settings, and disable Validate Certificates.

  2. Click Save Settings.

  3. Reboot the phone manually.

  • After it reboots, the phone downloads its configuration from Cloud Voice and applies the settings on its own.

  • The extension registers successfully on the phone. To confirm, check the registration status under Auto Provisioning > Phones in the web portal.

Provision multiple phones with DHCP option 66

Section titled “Provision multiple phones with DHCP option 66”
  • Only one DHCP server may be active on the subnet where the phones are deployed. If more than one is present, the phones may fail to obtain an IP address.
  • Make sure the default auto provisioning template for your phone model has been downloaded. You’ll find the templates under Auto Provisioning > Resource Repository > Default Templates.
  • If a phone was used previously, factory-reset it first.
  • Have each phone’s details on hand: vendor, model, and MAC address.

Step 2. Set DHCP option 66 on the DHCP server

Section titled “Step 2. Set DHCP option 66 on the DHCP server”

On the subnet where the phones are deployed, use the generated provisioning link to configure option 66 on your DHCP server.

  1. In the Cloud Voice web portal, copy the provisioning link from the phone’s detail page.
