πŸ“‹ Emergency Calling Overview

This topic describes the key concepts you need to know before managing emergency calling, including requirements and restrictions, basic emergency calling, and enhanced emergency calling.

Requirements

To make an emergency call, you should be aware of the following requirements:

  • At least one outbound route must be registered to IZT Cloud Voice.
  • A basic trunk should be configured for an emergency number.

Basic emergency calling

The basic emergency service allows users to be routed to the local Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), but no location information is provided. This service exists to provide location information to the PSAP. PSAP data storage is arranged by specific authorized and vetted emergency service providers.

For more information, see Set up Basic Emergency Calling.

Enhanced emergency calling

The enhanced emergency calling service allows emergency services to add location details, such as E911 in North America or E112 in Europe. Enhanced 911 (E911) Service provides more accurate location information.

With enhanced emergency calls, the PSAP can immediately pinpoint the caller's location based on the caller ID.

⚠️

⚠ Important: If you are using a third-party service, such as IZT Cloud Voice IZT Cloud Voice, the emergency caller's location can only be determined by the Emergency Control Center's CLI for enhanced emergency calls.

For more information, see Set up Enhanced Emergency Calling.

Terminology

The following list defines the key terminology for enhanced emergency calling:

  • PSAP: A Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) is responsible for receiving emergency calls and arranging appropriate emergency assistance, such as dispatching police, fire, or ambulance services.
  • ERL: An Emergency Response Location (ERL) is a specific geographic location to which an emergency response team may be dispatched. You provide the PSAP with the emergency caller’s precise location, and you may need to set up multiple ERLs.
  • ELIN: An Emergency Location Identification Number (ELIN) is the phone number (Caller ID) associated with an ERL. When an emergency call is made, the ELIN is displayed to the PSAP. The PSAP then calls the emergency caller back in case the call is disconnected.

β„Ή Note: An ELIN is attached to an ERL to help the PSAP call back in case the call is disconnected.

Examples of ERL/ELIN mapping:

  • One ERL for each building
  • One ELIN for the same building:
