Cloud Voice App Desktop Client CTI Overview

The Cloud Voice App Desktop Client runs in one of two modes: softphone or CTI. Your choice decides whether calls are placed and answered on the computer itself, or on a separate device that the Desktop Client controls remotely. This page explains both modes and lists the call operations each one supports.

In softphone mode, the Desktop Client is a full phone that lives entirely on your computer. It sends and receives calls over your internet connection, so no physical handset is needed. On top of the calling features you would expect from a desk phone, it adds collaboration tools such as instant messaging, video calls, and extension presence (seeing at a glance whether your colleagues are free, busy, or on a call).

Choose softphone mode when there is no desk phone at your workstation. You can then handle everything from the application, including:

  1. Place and end a call.
  2. Start a second call.
  3. Answer or reject an incoming call.
  4. Mute and unmute a call.
  5. Transfer a call, either attended (you speak to the person first, then hand the call over) or blind (you send the call straight through without speaking first).
  6. Record a call.
  7. Hold and resume a call.
  8. Swap between held calls (swap hold).
  9. Add a participant to a call.
  10. Merge separate calls together.
  11. Flip a call to another device (move a call that is already in progress to another of your own devices without hanging up).
  12. And more.

Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) links your computer to a phone system so you can manage calls from your screen. In CTI mode, the Desktop Client is not the phone itself; it acts as a visual control panel. Calls are still carried on a connected desk phone, the Cloud Voice App Web Client, or the Cloud Voice App Mobile Client, while the Desktop Client gives you an on-screen way to run the supported operations.

From this control panel you can drive IP phones (desk phones that connect over your network), the Cloud Voice App Web Client, and the Cloud Voice App Mobile Client. Choose CTI mode when you prefer to talk on one of those endpoints but still want call control from your computer. The operations available to you depend on which endpoint is connected, as shown in the table below.

The following table shows which call operations each connected endpoint supports. “CTI-compatible IP phones” refers to the Yealink, Fanvil, Snom, and Grandstream models listed in the compatibility tables further down this page.
